Beauty School - A Salon Apprentice Program
-
Apprentices get a 90-day trial period. At the end of the 90 days, we'll talk about how you're doing as a stylist and team player. If things aren't clicking, we may need to rethink the program and job situation. We don't anticipate this, but we want to be honest and upfront.
You'll get plenty of feedback along the way, so nothing should be a surprise, but 90 days is a serious make-or-break benchmark.
Your daily groove: cleaning, tearing foils, desk work, and supporting the stylist. Flexibility is the name of the game, and we have each other's backs as long as you communicate. More details are in our other documents.Pay: $15 an hour
The first 2 weeks are training on assisting and desk work with the current assistant and Cali
Classes start after the first 2 weeks
-
2 weeks. One class each week, alternating between Cali and Leah. Each class is about 2–3 hours, done on a model (or mannequin) provided by the educator. The educator demos, then the apprentice does the technique the same day.
Chair/client etiquette and expectations
Blowouts
Iron work
Shampooing and treatments
Vish introduction (video training)
Once completed, you're open on the floor for blowouts and for assisting other stylists with blowouts.
-
About 3 months of classes, with 6 weeks of Test Out Models.
Minimum of 8 classes, usually every other week, sometimes weekly, as determined by Cali
Minimum of 16 cutting Test Out Models, with 6 weeks to complete them
Once ALL cutting models have PASSED, you get "Floor Time" (the equivalent of 8–9 hours on the floor). You will be available for “Apprentice Cut” at a discounted rate.
Pay changes to a bonus on top of $15 an hour for percentage-booked goals met. You're expected to come in for all scheduled shifts, not just when booked
Desk/assistant shifts continue
If utilization is at 70% for more than 3 months, more time will be opened on your books for Floor Time as the schedule allows
-
Color classes only begin AFTER all cutting models have been completed and passed. Color is not started alongside the cutting phase. Once cutting is done, color moves in two steps: classes first, then color models.
Step 1 – Color Classes
Classes with Leah, about every other week (with some exceptions based on curriculum)
Minimum of 10 classes, plus basic color theory virtual classes
About 6–8 months for classes and models combined
Step 2 – Color Test Out Models
Color models begin AFTER the color classes are complete
Minimum of 15 color Test Out Models, roughly 8 weeks to complete
-
You become an Emerging Stylist once you complete all classes and models in both cutting and color. Commission opportunities start in this phase.
First 6 Months (about 2 days on the floor)
17.5 hours open for booking (Floor/Support hours) and 17.5 continued Support/Desk hours
Floor/Support hours are open for booking, but you come in and get paid to help even if you aren't booked
Monthly goal meetings (1-on-1s, in person) with Cali & Leah
6–12 Months
Floor/Support changes to FLOOR ONLY hours (17.5), and you only come in when you're booked for those hours
Support/Desk hours continue at 17.5 (roughly 2 days) unless booking demand means we need to open more days
-
At least 1 day will be open for Test Out Models, and when possible we'll accommodate up to 2 days.
As an apprentice, it's your responsibility to book and find your own models. The salon and desk staff won't handle the bookings.
Every model is a simple Pass or Redo on: consultation, formulation, execution, timeliness, and finish work.
No "dings" allowed. It's gotta be mic-drop good, because we have a rep to protect. If you get a Redo, you'll need to find another model and redo the service.
Cutting "Core" Test Out Models: minimum of 16, roughly 6 weeks to complete
Color Test Out Models: minimum of 15, roughly 8 weeks to complete
If models aren't completed within the allotted time, we'll need to reassess our agreement and possibly move on.
Program Vibes
The program includes multiple phases covering customer service, cutting, styling, color, and color theory.
The whole thing takes around 1–1.5 years, from apprentice to thriving on the floor. Our goal is to help you become a stylist who can confidently work the floor and is educated enough to tackle whatever sits in your chair.
This is our 5th + year developing an education program, and we adjust it every year.
Each stage has a timeline, so don't drag it out if you can help it. We'll do our best to hold up our end of this agreement too.
Program Order at a Glance

Phase 2 – Cutting with Cali: classes, then cutting Test Out Models
Phase 3 – Color with Leah: begins ONLY after every cutting model has passed. Color classes first, then color Test Out Models
